Hydrogen breath test

Many people suffer from abdominal gas and bloating, which can be caused by bacteria in the intestine or by food intolerances, among other concerns. This breath test can help to identify lactose intolerance, fructose intolerance or abnormal intestinal bacteria.

A breath sample is collected and tested for hydrogen; the patient will then drink a pleasant liquid. Further breath samples are collected for two to three hours. If increasing hydrogen is detected, a digestive problem is indicated.
